xv + 194pp, illustrated. Softback, an excellent clean tight copy. Personal experiences of the authors and their peers, some 300 airmen, most of them National Servicemen, who, around fifty years ago, were selected to study spoken Chinese and then sent on operational duty to the Crown Colony of Hong Kong, at the time still a remote output of Empire. The authors, themselves former Chinese linguists, have drawn on previously classified documents in the National Archives which are now in the public domain, as well as personal reminiscences of some of those involved, to put together this account of the young men's experience of learning a strange language, their travels to the Far East and their exposure to an unfamiliar culture. This book seeks to record a small fragment of little-known RAF signals history during the Cold War, before it fades into obscurity with the passage of time.
